Action and Info.
You can support the effort to fight AIDS, TB and malaria.
Step one: Learn more about the international effort to fight these diseases by reading the Global Hero page.
Step two: Write a letter to the federal government. Letter writing is a great way to make a difference. Many politicians read letters addressed to them-especially if they is hand-written-because they like to be in touch with everyday Canadians. Your letter doesn't have to be long and drawn out. Take forty-five minutes to put it together.
Write to the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, Prime Minister of Canada, Ottawa, K1A 0A2
- Tell him that you are in favour of supporting the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.
- Tell him that for The Fund to get its required operating budget, each of the world's 48 wealthiest countries needs to give 0.035% of their GDP to this cause annually. In Canada's case this amounts to about 243 million.
- Remind him that the recent United Nations Human Development Report shows that Canada is ranked just behind Norway and Sweden as one of the top three countries in the world. While Norway and Sweden are both among the most generous countries in the world, each with foreign aid levels above the international target of 0.7 per cent of GNP, Canada's aid level fell to 0.23 per cent of GNP in 2000.
Send an adapted copy of your letter to a local newspaper.
