Action and Info - Agricultural Subsidies
There are a few things you can do to help the global food distribution problem:
- Buy locally grown food, or buy food that is produced with few herbicides and pesticides. Local food requires little transportation, and by buying it you help nearby farmers to earn a living. As the Haiti case shows, if everyone buys locally grown food, there will be less hunger in the world.
- Eat less meat. To produce a quarter-pound hamburger patty, a cow has to be fed about 1.2 pounds of grain. About 2,400 litres of water are used up in the process of feeding the animal and growing the grain. This takes up a lot of resources. If you eat less meat, then your diet will use up less of the world's energy.
